But this doesn't stop Assane setting out on his latest Arsène Lupin-inspired caper - stealing the priceless Black Pearl.

Talking about the third run, the show's writer George Kay previously told RadioTimes.com: "Assane has gone from a life of anonymity as a criminal in parts 1 and 2, and now he is France’s most wanted man – his cover is broken because of what happened towards the end of Part 2 at the Théâtre du Châtelet, and now everybody is asking the same question, 'Where is he?' which is a problem when you're a thief, because when you try and steal things, everyone knows what you look like.

"So he comes back into Paris at the start of Part 3 and discovers that the whole city is looking for him."

Alongside Sy as Assane, plenty of familiar faces are back for Part 3, as well as a number of new faces, too.

Lupin Part 3 release date

Lupin returned on Thursday 5th October.

Who stars in Lupin Part 3?

Sy is, of course, back on our screens as gentleman thief Assane Diop.

Other familiar faces returning are:

• Ludivine Sagnier as Claire, Assane's ex-girlfriend and the mother of his child
• Etan Simon as Raoul, Assane and Claire's son
• Antoine Gouy as Benjamin Ferel, Assane's closest friend
• Soufiane Guerrab as Youssef Guedira, a detective who uses his knowledge of the Arsene Lupin books to hunt Assane
• Shirine Boutella as Lieutenant Sofia Belkacem, a lieutenant detective
• Fargass Assandé as Babakar, Assane's late father
• Mamadou Haidara as young Assane
• Ludmilla Makowski as young Claire

And there will be plenty of new characters also, who are guaranteed to spice up proceedings.

Lupin Part 3 spoilers: What will happen?

Part 2, as mentioned, closed with Hubert Pellegrini in cuffs, the late Babakar's name cleared, and Assane's name also cleared (with Pellegrini having framed him for the killing of his henchman Leonard earlier in the season).

But the story is far from over – the final scene of part 2 saw Assane bid an emotional farewell to Claire and his son Raoul, with the police hot on his tail. (Yes, he's no longer believed to be a murderer, but Assane is still a wanted criminal, what with all those crafty heists he's been pulling.)

As for part 3, this is what you can expect.

"Assane has gone from a life of anonymity as a criminal in parts 1 and 2 and now he is France's most wanted man," said Kay. "His cover is broken because of what happened towards the end of part 2... and now everybody is asking the same question, 'Where is he?', which is a problem when you're a thief. When you try and steal things, everyone knows what you look like.

"So he comes back into Paris at the start of part 3 and discovers that the whole city is looking for him."

Kay also revealed that Assane has "an ongoing quest to sort out his relationship with Claire and Raoul", adding: "One of the things I love about Lupin is that he's a superhero with flaws, so he can do anything he wants but he can't sort out his relationship with his son and his personal life, which hopefully makes him a relatable man rather than just a superhero in a cape.

"So, his next move is to try and patch things up, and he'll do that through doing grand crimes or by being back in his family’s company, or putting together a plan in which they can escape. At the heart of what he's trying to do the whole time is put his family together."

Kay also teased an "invisible" antagonist in part 3.

"There was a different invisibility in parts 1 and 2 in which Assane was invisible by the fact that he was from a different ethnicity," said Kay. "Invisibility in part 3 is a necessity because Assane's the most wanted man in France, so he cannot do the things he used to do.

"He has to look over his shoulder at all times. And Assane Diop in part 3 is a man constantly looking over his shoulder in all respects, in terms of the past, in terms of who might be following him, in terms of the mystery about who's out to get him.

"The important fact as well is that the person who is his antagonist in Part 3 is also invisible, so there's a lot of invisible forces swirling around Paris in Part 3 of Lupin."

Part 3's big bad will also cause problems for Assane's closest confidante, Ben.

"The antagonist knows how important friends and family are to Assane Diop and in a way they know that this is his Achilles' heel," said Kay. "Benjamin Férel is his oldest friend, his closest sidekick, and so he's targeted just as Assane is in part 3, and their friendship is put to the test, put in danger.

"And the loyalty between them, which is so often unspoken, is put into a crisis."

And, of course, you can expect all future escapades to take further inspiration from the Arsène Lupin books, which serve as the source material for the series.
